Recipes -> Pickles and Chutneys -> Chutney Recipes

A chutney is a variety of sweet and spicy condiments. They can be wet or dry. In India, chutneys are made fresh and eaten. It may not contain any preservatives because they are intended for eating immediately after preparation.

Chutney can be prepared using fresh green chilli peppers; the other main ingredient can be any of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Most vegetable chutneys are prepared cold in a blender, while many fruit chutneys do require cooking.

Popular chutneys include Coconut chutney, Onion chutney, Tomato chutney, Coriander (Cilantro) and/or mint chutney (both are called green chutneys), Tamarind chutney (Imli chutney), mango chutney (made from unripe, green mangos), Lime chutney, Garlic chutney made from fresh garlic, coconut and groundnut and Green tomato chutney.

Chutneys are used as accompaniments to Idli, Dosa and also for many other snack items like Vada, Samosa etc.
