Thrissur District Website

The term Thrissur is the abbreviated anglicized form of the Malayalam word "THRISSIVAPERUR" which means the town of the "SACRED SIVA". The town is built on an elevated ground, at the apex of which is the famous "VADAKKUMNATHAN" Temple. A place of great antiquity, Thrissur was also known as "VRISHABHADRIPURAM" and "TEN KAILASAM" in ancient days.

The Thrissur Pooram festival in the Vadakkumnathan Temple is celebrated annually in April-May. It is a festival in which Gods and Goddesses from various trembles are brought in all pomp and pageantry with the play of drums and musical instruments and pyrotechnics to the Thekkinkadu Maidan. Lakhs of people attend the festival.

The famous Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur comes under this district.
