Church was established in 1871 AD under the leadership of Mr. Mathu Varkey,Chundalnal Kottisserikkudiyil.

Pulikkottil Joseph Mar Dionasius Metropolitan laid the foundation stone for the church in the name of St.Stephen,first martyr of Christianity.

The first vicar of the church is said to be Rev.Fr.Thoma , Ayathukudy who was also one of the vicars of St.Mary's Church, Kothamangalam at that time.
