Law Department



The Law Department is a distinct and independent unit within the Secretariat. This Department is housed in the Main block of the Secretariat building, which is in the southern side of the Durbar Hall. The business of the Law Department is transacted by the Secretary to Government assisted by other officers of the Department.

The Law Department is generally guided by the procedure laid down in the Secretariat Manual in the working of the Department. But in view of the special nature of the work in the Department sometimes procedure slightly different is adopted in respect of certain items of work in the department.

The business of the Law Department consists of: -
(1) General Administration of the Department;
(2) Drafting, which includes Legislative project, Legislation and unification of Laws;
(3) Legal Advice;
(4) Subsidiary Legislation;
(5) Publication;
(6) Conveyancing; and
(7) Translation.

At present this Department consists of 30 sections. Since Law Department is a separate unit within the Secretariat matters relating to the establishment, staff, budget, contingencies, furniture, stationery and all other administrative matters of the department are attended to in the Department itself. Matters relating to appointment of Government Law Officers and Appointment and Removal of Notaries are also attended to in this Department.
