Vaikom Mahadeva temple is located at Vaikom, about 40 km awaya from Kottayam. The Mahadeva Temple at Vaikom is one of the most famous and oldest Siva temples in Kerala.
Vaikom Shiva temple along with Ettumanoor Siva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple is considered a powerful trisome. It is believed that a devotee who worships in these three temples before the afternoon pooja in a day, all his wishes will be fulfilled.
There is regular Annadanam in this temple, made as an offering to Vaikathappan (Shiva at Vaikom). Vaikathashtami is the most important festival of Vaikom Mahadeva Temple.
The idol of Vaikom Temple, the Shiva Linga is believed to be from 'Treta yuga' and the temple had uninterrupted worship since its inception.
Vaikom Mahadeva Temple has a large compound, the temple surroundings is located in an 8 acre land.
