Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

Vaikom Mahadeva temple is located at Vaikom, about 40 km awaya from Kottayam. The Mahadeva Temple at Vaikom is one of the most famous and oldest Siva temples in Kerala. The utsavam in this temple is celebrated for twelve days during the dark lunar fortnight of Vrischikam, (November-December) the Ashtami falling on the last day. During the night on the Ashtami day the deities of the neighbouring temples will be ceremoniously brought in procession to this temple. Vaikom has a historic importance. Mahatma Gandhi held the 'Vaikom Sathyagraha' for the Harijans for permitting them to enter into the temple. Siva at this temple is also known as 'Annadana Prabhu'. This is because there is food for all who need in the temple daily.
