Tourism Places in Idukki

Idukki district is one of the most beautiful districts of Kerala with its natural high range beauty and the dense green forests. The district headquarters is located at Kuyilimala in Painavu. The largest Arch Dam in India is the Idukki Dam. It is built across the Periyar River and caters to the water needs of half the state of Kerala.

Idukki has some picturesque locations in Munnar, Peerumed, Thekkady, Kumali, Nedumkandam. Munnar, the hill station is one of the popular destinations of tourists in Kerala. Thekkady which houses the Periyar Tiger Reserve is also another popular destination. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctury, Eravikulam-Rajamala Wild Life Sanctury, Anamudi Shola National Park, Pampadum Shola National Park, and Thattekad Bird Sanctuary has some of the protected and rare species of animals, birds and plants. Plantaions of Tea, Coffee, Cardamom and rubber can be seen all around the district.

There are facilities for Trekking also in many parts of the district. The cool climate in the district also makes it popular among the tourists, both foreigners and local people.

Munnar : Munnar is a tourist centre 113 km away from Kochi, situated at a height of 6000m above sea level

Thekkadi : Thekkadi is located about 117 km from Kottayam and 20 km from Kothamangalam

Peerumedu : Peerumedu is a place famous for Coffee and Tea estates, situated 75 km away from Kottayam on the way to Idukki

Marayoor : Marayoor is situated 41km from Munnar

Kumali : Kumali is the gateway to the tourist centre Thekkady

Idukki Arch Dam : Idukki Dam is the first Arch Dam in India, situated 40km away from Thodupuzha and 75 km away from Kottayam

Eravikulam-Rajamala Wild Life Sanctury : The National Park situated 144 km away from Cochin and 15 km from Munnar

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctury : The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctury is situated on both sides of Marayoor-Udumalpetta road
