KumarakomKumarakom is situated 12 km away from Kottayam, on the banks of Lake Vembanad. A Bird Sanctury is located at Kavanattinkara near Kumarakom. The Bird Sanctuary is now a major tourist attraction and has been bought under the jurisdiction of KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation). Kumarakom is not entirely a tourist dependent town but also derives a reasonable income from agriculture. The area is populated by mangrove forests, paddy fields and coconut groves. Furthermore Kumarakom's perfectly balanced tropical climate poses an advantage to the growth of plants and trees. There are several Tourist Resorts and Hotels for tourist accomodation. House Boats and other boating facilities are also available at Kumarakom.
