World famous Thrissur Pooram festival is conducted in this temple. The main attraction of the Pooram is the Elanjitharamelam, a two-hour Chendavadyam (with five instruments) is held near Koothambalam in the temple. It is a very colourful festival with caparisoned elephants from the two sides Paramelkavu and Thiruvambadi.

Mahashivaratri, Aanayoottu, are the other major festivities of Vadakkumnathan temple. Shiva is worshipped as 'Vadakkumnathan' in this temple.

The temple is famous for the murals, of which the Vasukishayana and Nrithanatha murals are of great importance and are worshipped daily.
