Mohanlal popularly known as Lal among his peers and laletten among fans got interested in films early in his life.
His father Viswanathan Nair was an advocate employed in the Kerala Government Secretariat in the legal department and Mother Santhakumari is a homemaker.
Kid Mohan grew up at Mudavanmugal, Poojappura. He attended the local school at Mudavanmugal and later completed his schooling from the Govt. Model School, Thiruvanathapuram. An average student at school, he took to acting very early in life as he used to participate in school-plays. In the sixth grade, young Lal was chosen the best actor, an award that was usually bagged by tenth graders.
He attended Mahatma Gandhi College after school and continued his association with acting and won numerous best actor awards. In college he met a group of fellow-students who were passionate about theatre and feature films. They were instrumental in getting him his first breakthrough in film, and some of them where Priyadarshan and Manian Pilla Raju.They formed a company called Bharath Cine Group.
At the young age of 18 he acted in his first film Thiranottam. The camera started rolling and assistant director clapped the clapboard and moved away and Lal began acting for film on 4th day of September 1978 at 11.30 AM on Kesavadev Road, in front of Lal's house in Mudavanmugal. The team included Suresh Kumar, Unni, Priyadarshan, S Kumar etc.
The location for Thiranottam was Lal's Mudavanmugal house, Suresh's house and the surroundings. Lal acted a humorous character of a mentally retarded servant named Kuttappan. In the film the first scene was Lal cycling his way to his house in Mudavanmugal.
The movie was completed but censer board stood against it and stopped the release by saying that the film contains some scenes which are unacceptable. But the team managed to get special sanction from Indian President and they released the movie in a theatre at Kollam.
As there was passion for cinema in these guys, they arranged some money from a financer and started off to Madras, the film city by train. They got Room No: 3 of the famous Swamy's Lodge.
One morning they sighted an ad for new faces in a Malayalam movie in Malayala Manorama daily. For applying, Lal took a couple of snaps at the near by studio. He was not convinced with his photos and decided not to apply. But his friend Suresh who is well aware of Lal's capabilities as an actor, send those photos to the address without Lal's knowledge.
The next day Lal received a telegram asking him to attend an interview. He was in front of then eminent directors Fazil, Sibi Malayil and Jijo. Fazil noticed him and given him the chance to be the villain in his first movie. Manjil Virinja Pookkal which was shot in Kodaikkanal in 1980 when Lal was 20 years old. The movie was a great success. Everyone played their part well; viewers realized the potential of Lal.
In the year 1983 he had to his credit more than 25 feature films.
Three years later in 1986 he stuck gold with the all time super hit Rajavinte Makan. Rajavinte Makan was actually offered to Mammooty but he was not able to work in the film cause his call sheet problem. After the release of Rajavinte Makan superstar Lal never looked back.
Mohanlal married Suchitra, the daughter of well-known Tamil actor and producer K. Balaji on April 28, 1988. He has two children, Pranav and Vismaya.
Mohanlal received Padmasree from the Government of India in 2001. Padmasree is one of the nationís highest civilian honor. He also won the National award for the best actor twice for films Bharatham and Vanaprastham. For his film Kalapani Lal bagged five national awards and seven state awards.
Mohanlal did six-month course in Kathakali to get the mudras and the eye movementsí right for the film Vanaprastham. During the shooting of Vanaprastham a French Technician said: "He is the man born in the wrong side of the world; if he is in some other country he may already have got the Oscar."
Lal is rated as one of the most talented actors in India. There are not many actors who can portray both comic and serious roles with the same ease. Itís been acknowledged that he's is the most spontaneous actor on the scene today.
In the year 2001, Lal donned the role of Karna in Sanskrit production of Karnabharam at the National School of Drama annual festival in Delhi.
He made his debut in Bollywood with the Hindi film Company in 2002.
The year 2003 was a landmark for the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal as he completed 25 years in the film industry on September 4, 2003. A week-long celebration to mark his 25 years in cinema took place in Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. Movie Director Balu Mahendra inaugurated a week-long Mohanlal films screening.
Lal is known for his versatility and natural acting. His movie roles of the late 80s and early 90s made him the darling of masses. His most notable roles include Solomon in Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Dasan in Nadodikkattu, Jayakrishnan in Thoovanathumbikal, Vishnu in Chithram, Sethu Madhavan in Kireedam, Gopi in Bharatham, Mangalassery Neelakandan in Devasuram, Anand in Iruvar, Kunhikuttan in Vanaprastham, and Aadu Thoma in Spadikam.

He was elected as the Most Popular Keralite in a survey conducted by the National news channel CNN-IBN related to the Golden Jubilee of Kerala formation in 2006.
