Ashtamudi is the fresh water lake in Kerala. Boating through Ashtamudi Kayal is a thrilling experience. Kollam - Alapuzha Water route is through Ashtamudikkayal. Chinese nets (Cheenavayal) fixed in the backwaters adds to the beauty of this place. Ashtamudi Lake is the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala.

Ashtamudi Wetland was included in the list of wetlands of international importance. The Kallada river which originates in the western ghats flows through forests and plains and finally drains into the Ashtamudi. One can take a backwater cruise starting at Kollam and ending the journey at Alappuzha.
